Decentralized technologies often assume a baseline of urban infrastructure, but true resilience is tested at the rural edge. In this session, Michael Suantak, founder of ASORCOM and eimiAI, shares the blueprint for deploying offline-first community mesh networks and sovereign, localized AI for stateless and marginalized communities.
The Context
While much of the decentralized web movement focuses on software protocols built for ecosystems with reliable power and internet, the true test of a "Root System" is at the margins. Through my work as the founder of Alternative Solutions for Rural Communities (ASORCOM) and eimiAI, I have seen firsthand how centralized networks fail rural, stateless, and indigenous communities. To truly uphold the DWeb principles of Humanity and Distributed Benefits, we must design for environments defined by hardware scarcity, power constraints, and linguistic barriers.
What I Will Share
In this 30-minute presentation, I will share the grassroots blueprint for building tech at the rural edge:
The Infrastructure Layer: Real-world case studies from ASORCOM on deploying community-owned mesh networks in deep rural areas. We will look at the friction points of ecological hardware constraints and establishing offline-first communication.
The Intelligence Layer: An introduction to eimiAI, and how we are building localized, accountable AI tools that translate marginalized languages and operate without relying on massive, centralized data centers.
The Human Layer: How we foster community ownership, governance, and trust so that these decentralized systems outlast the initial deployment.
Why This Matters for DWeb Camp
I was honored to be selected as a DWeb Fellow twice previously, though US visa barriers kept me from attending. Now, with the camp in Germany, I am thrilled to finally bring these insights in person. This talk shifts the focus from top-down architecture to bottom-up survival. It challenges DWeb builders to ensure their tools actually work for the most isolated among us. Attendees will leave with a practical understanding of how to build tools that are highly accessible, ecologically aware, and truly empowering for local communities.
Michael Suantak is the founder of ASORCOM (Alternative Solutions for Rural Communities) and eimiAI. Operating at the intersection of indigenous rights and decentralized technology, he engineers autonomous, offline-first communication networks in extreme conflict zones, specifically along the India-Myanmar border.
During state-sponsored internet blackouts and kinetic warfare, Michael’s work focuses on keeping community knowledge, medical coordination, and human agency alive. He is the architect of the "Digital Tarzan" philosophy, which advocates for frugal, rugged infrastructure built from the soil up. His field deployments combine 12V DC-native solar power, tactical LoRa mesh networks, HF radio, and localized edge AI to ensure marginalized communities retain cognitive and digital sovereignty when the centralized grid fails.
Michael believes that true autonomy is not given—it is engineered. His ongoing mission is to help rural populations transition from vulnerable digital consumers into resilient digital sovereigns.
