The original goal of the DWeb principles was to distinguish our ideals against the behaviors of many centralized web projects and firms then, as now, pursuing excessive wealth, or engaged in unethical and criminal endeavors. We always wanted these principles to live and evolve.
And today, we ask: how can we re-imagine these principles as a way of determining where we collectively want DWeb, a movement and an ideal, to go? And what do we want DWeb to be?
This is the fifth DWeb Camp since 2019. Since then, the community of engineers, organizers, designers, and builders of all stripes who aim to build a better, private, reliable, secure and open web has continued to grow around the world. We come together for a common cause to invest our time and energy building network technologies that give concrete agency to people and their communities. And we do this through the design, development, and maintenance of tools that are interoperable, open source, and designed to maximize positive impact and minimize harm.
This is a session that aims to set out goals, lofty or pragmatic, for what the DWeb movement can be in the years to come. This will not be a session to moan the morass we’re in, but to describe the mountain we aim to climb. How do we move from where we are with network technologies, to where we want to go? How does the DWeb community play a role in helping us get there?
The goal of this session is to have an honest but practical, goals-oriented discussion about how DWeb can evolve to meet the moment, better fulfill our principles, and be an impactful force for positive change.
Here will be some guiding questions:
- What are DWeb’s strengths and opportunities as a network/movement? What are our weaknesses or limitations?
- How can the DWeb Principles be actuated and realized?
- Should DWeb become more of a multinational, multicultural movement? If so, what do we need to consider to make this happen?
