An open space to share lessons learned from applying peer-to-peer technologies and methodologies in real-world applications.
Peer-to-peer - in all of its various shapes - is often seen as this idealistic application of technology that spends years incubating in academia or explorations of curiosity. While there are exciting developments in the space in recent years, it feels like I still haven't seen much of it used consistently in practice, especially to solve real challenges that align with peer-to-peer approaches.
In an effort to learn more about how I could be wrong about this observation, I would like to have an open space or discussion about ways people are making use of these in the real world. What problems are they trying to address? What kind of challenges have influenced the design of the solutions? Where can there be improvements in the ecosystem? I think this session can be rather informal. If anything, it might end up just turning into a place where people will vent their frustrations with peer-to-peer as a whole (totally valid in my eyes).
In general, I'm hoping that there will be people who will share their experiences as:
Providers and builders: What problem(s) are being addressed? How do constraints shape the approach? What is their definition of peer-to-peer?
End-users and community organizers or practitioners: Learning more about people who have tried - and maybe failed - to use peer-to-peer for their community's needs is such a crucial component that should inform the work done in the space. Many efforts from the technological side often lack user stories that drive design decisions.
In my case, I would mostly be contributing with my own experiences working on Mapeo and CoMapeo for the past 5 years (and maybe to a lesser extent, Manyverse). I would describe the context I work in as "aligned with peer-to-peer, but subject to the harsh realities of technology". I have a feeling that this may resonate with others who have participated in the space.
Andrew is a technologist based in New York City that has always had a strong curiosity for decentralized technologies. He has worked on peer-to-peer applications focused on data autonomy and offline-first use cases since 2021, primarily in the form of data collection and mapping tools for indigenous communities at Awana Digital.
