Briar is a chat application that keeps working even when the Internet is shut down by using Bluetooth and USB flash drives. Let's meet to set up Briar and test it during DWeb Camp.
When there is Internet connectivity, Briar uses the Tor network to synchronize messages with your peers. When the Internet is not available, Briar falls back to using local Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB flash drives to keep messages flowing.
Briar runs on Android and desktop devices and works totally autonomous. There are no Briar servers—all information is stored locally on your device and exchanged directly with your fellow peers. Briar has a strong focus on security, being one of few projects that hide even metadata of your conversations.
A developer of Briar will be there to discuss any arising issue or wish during the workshop. We'd love to use this opportunity to connect with Briar's userbase and see where things can be improved.
You may install Briar beforehand on your device, but you can also get it shared with you offline via the in-app sharing functionality. So bring your devices, flash drives, and pigeons and get connected!
Nico started the development of Briar Desktop to bring Briar to non-Android platforms. Having been an F-Droid developer for a long time, he sincerely wishes free alternatives to Android to succeed and is mainly interested in free software to empower people.
