In this workshop you'll learn everything you need to start hosting your own wiki. Bring a laptop and by the end of the session you're going to have your own MediaWiki instance, ready to capture your thoughts and ideas.
If you've ever thought about creating your own wiki, this is the right Workshop for you. Maybe you're interested in learning how to use Free Software tools to organize your ideas in an open and accessible way. Maybe you want to create a shared knowledge management platform for your organization.
The MediaWiki software is one of the most popular wiki software systems. MediaWiki powers wiki websites like Wikipedia, Wikidata, and wikiHow. MediaWiki is one of the best documented and usable software systems out there, no matter whether you want to host a wiki for yourself or for a large organization with thousands of users.
In this workshop you'll learn how to set up MediaWiki on your own computer to test it out. You can also follow the same steps and install MediaWiki on a web server. You'll learn how to configure MediaWiki, set up a user, and create your first page.
Please bring a laptop that you can use to install software and use a browser on. The instructions will be easiest to follow if you have a laptop running either Debian, Ubuntu, or macOS. Alternatively, you can organize an account to either a shared-hosting web server with file transfer access (SFTP or similar) or a Virtual Private Server (VPS) with remote shell (SSH) access. You can also set up MediaWiki together with the other workshop participants and set up your own MediaWiki later on your own time.
You'll get the most out of this workshop if you already know how to open a shell on your laptop and if you've used a MediaWiki website before. Here's where wikis shine: many Wikis are open to the public to contribute. You could submit an edit to a page on a MediaWiki website like Wikipedia in your language and you'll learn how to make simple edits in no time.
In this workshop you'll first hear an introduction to what MediaWiki is and how it works in principle. Then, we'll jump right into it and start installing MediaWiki on your own computer.
I look forward to seeing you at the workshop and helping you get started setting up your own wiki.
