P2P VPNs: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly
2026-07-09 , Idea Stage

An in-depth overview of Peer-to-Peer VPNs and their performance characteristics.

This presentation explores the performance of ten peer-to-peer mesh VPN implementations, tested under controlled network conditions using a reproducible, Nix-based benchmarking framework. We examine how rankings shift under different network impairments and reveal surprising findings, including a userspace stack outperforming the Linux kernel's default networking and a critical security vulnerability discovered through source code analysis.
