Revisiting Secure Scuttlebutt in 2026
2026-07-10 , Open Social Space

Secure Scuttlebutt has been an influential decentralisation ecosystem for years. In this brief talk we revisit it and also highlight recent work and why it is still a good option for 2026.

This talk will cover Secure Scuttlebutt ecosystem, highlighting current work and apps available and why it is a good option for local first and hyper local communities. One of the few protocols able to work without the Internet, in the middle of oceans and forests, it is an important tool in this day and age when big tech actively works to make the Web and the Internet something that is only under their control. Secure Scuttlebutt can be the foundation from which you build your community corner.

Andre is a writer and software developer involved with the Secure Scuttlebutt community. He’s a hybrid author but favours self-publishing because owning your own platform is important and also because he secretly enjoys tinkering with ePubs. Andre published many non-fiction books focused on computer programming, and has been featured in a couple of Science Fiction and Horror short story anthologies.

Andre is originally from Brazil but now lives in Scotland with his cat.
